Maybe it will pay to stick with youth in the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood
In the 2011 Nassau Stakes, Sir Henry Cecil’s star mare Midday made history when she become the first horse to win the prestigious Group One three times. Since 1980 only one other horse, Ruby Tiger, had won the race more than once.
Midday’s retirement means a new Goodwood hero will be born on Saturday. Of the 10 set to line up none can boast a win at the tricky Sussex course and only three have won at the 10 furlong trip.
Three year-olds have an exceptional record in the race, winning 10 of the last 15 runnings, so it could pay to focus on the likes of Maybe and The Fugue. Irish stables have had plenty of joy in the last decade and Aidan O’Brien has three entered at this stage including Epsom Oaks winner Was.
Izzi Top, from the John Gosden yard, is likely to go off favourite and the market leaders have an excellent recent record, winning eight of the last 12 editions.
